Purpose
To establish specific procedures for working at heights, ensuring the safety of all personnel by preventing falls and minimizing the impact of falls through the use of appropriate fall protection equipment.
Scope
This procedure applies to all employees, contractors, and subcontractors working at heights on any construction site or facility managed by the company.
Definitions
- Work at Heights: Any work conducted at a height of 6 feet or more above a lower level.
- Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS): Equipment used to stop a fall from height, including harnesses, lanyards, and anchor points.
- Guardrails: Barrier systems installed to prevent falls from elevated surfaces.
- Safety Nets: Netting systems designed to catch workers in the event of a fall.
Procedure
1. Planning and Preparation
- Risk Assessment: Conduct a thorough risk assessment for any task involving work at heights. Identify potential hazards and implement control measures to mitigate risks.
- Equipment Selection: Choose appropriate fall protection equipment based on the task, height, and environment.
2. Use of Harnesses
- Selection: Ensure all harnesses are ANSI or OSHA approved and appropriate for the specific task.
- Inspection: Inspect harnesses before each use for signs of wear, damage, or deterioration. Replace any damaged equipment immediately.
- Fitting: Properly fit the harness to the user. Ensure all straps are adjusted snugly and buckled securely.
- Anchorage: Attach the lanyard to a secure anchor point capable of supporting at least 5,000 pounds per worker. Ensure anchor points are positioned above the work area to minimize fall distance.
- Connection: Use appropriate connectors (carabiners, D-rings) that are compatible with the harness and anchor points. Ensure connectors are locked and secured before use.
3. Use of Guardrails
